In the Making
Creativity in Religion and the Arts
Along with thinking liberals and radicals from all faiths we in the Sea of Faith Network are aware of the robust challenge to western religious society posed by the new wave of atheist writing, strident and often ill-informed.
Rather than adopting a defensive position to counter it we are determined to look critically at our humanly created religious faiths to discern what is of continuing value and worth preserving. Further, we need to explore how we can refresh, update, revive and creatively re-formulate them to cope with the demands and expectations of contemporary culture. In short, from our Non-Realist perspective we identify with a need to re-enchant a cynical and hard-bitten world.
We recognise that the arts, in all their rich variety, have a huge part to play in this and we are designing our conference in such a way as to provide opportunities for all who attend to experience an inspirational array of artistic media in which to experiment and to reevaluate and re-invigorate religious faith. At the same time, we hope that this conference will make clearer to us exactly where and how our lives, as individual and social beings, fit into wider culture - with both a capital and lower-case ‘C’.
